An Attractive Quality of Life

The quality of life in Roanoke Rapids matches that of major urban centers. City residents have easy access to the best medical facilities and educational institutions in the country. Roanoke Rapids sports over 16 first-class parks and recreational facilities, and the Roanoke Valley is an established and well-known hunting and fishing mecca. A wealth of regional tourist attractions enhance the quality of life in the valley. Roanoke Rapids has recently been designated as one of four cities in eastern NC as a "hub" for attracting motor coach operators, travel writers and tourism planners.

Roanoke Rapids Graded School District
The Roanoke Rapids School District is a small public school system consisting of a preschool center, an alternative school, two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. The district serves approximately 3000 students. It is only one of 15 public school systems that are not county districts remaining in North Carolina. The District has a history of excellence and progressivism. It was the first public school in N.C. to offer 12 grades, first to offer kindergarden to all students, and the first high school in NC accredited by SACS. The District has 28 national board certified teachers and 62 teachers with master's degrees. The District is officially recognized as one of two Paideia School Districts in the U.S. Roanoke Rapids High School offers 26 extracurricular activities. The average pupil-teacher ratio is 22.75. Standardized test scores are consistently above state and national averages. There is a strong emphasis on professional development, offering Teaching with Technology, Four Blocks Reading & Writing-Technology for Enhanced Literacy; National Humanities Center-Teaching American History grant; Science Technology & Assessment Project for math and science teachers; and Teachers & Scientists Collaborating for Inquiry-Based Learning.

Halifax Regional Medical Center
The healthcare of the Roanoke Valley revolves around Halifax Regional, our acute care community medical center. Conveniently located in a modern medical park in Roanoke Rapids, Halifax Regional is a 206-bed hospital that provides a broad range of high quality services to a six-county area. The Medical Center is recognized for the outstanding personal care our clinical professionals offer patients. In 2007, the North Carolina Nurses Association presented Halifax Regional with the Hallmarks of Healthy Workplaces Award, and four nurses were honored by their selection among the "Great 100 Nurses" in North Carolina. More than 60 physicians are on the medical staff of Halifax Regional, representing most medical specialties and most are certified in one or more areas of practice. The Medical Center is one of the largest employers in the region with over 800 staff members.As a private, not-for-profit organization, Halifax Regional is committed to providing quality healthcare services and improving the health of the communities it serves. The Medical Center invests significantly in technology, having recently added a state-of-the art MRI to its diagnostic imaging equipment and cardiology services, including a catheterization lab and angiography.
